The public charge rule change was published in the Federal Register by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on October 10, 2018. This rule threatens the health and the well-being of our immigrant communities. Individuals and their families will be placed in an inconceivable position to choose between accessing necessary health services and preserving their immigration status.

Over 210,000 comments against the public charge rule were submitted to the DHS during the public comment period that ended on December 10, 2018. This was an overwhelming response and the DHS will now need to review and respond to each submitted comment. It is important to note that the rule change has not taken effect as of yet. However, it does not dissipate the fear and anxiety that immigrant communities continue to face with inaccurate information or rumors they encounter regarding the public charge rule.

At Healthy Communities Foundation, we are committed to serve the immigrant communities that reside within our service region and support organizations and providers that work and advocate for them. As we continue to learn more about where the public charge rule issue stands, we will provide up-to-date information and resources to keep you informed of how it impacts the immigrant communities you may serve.
